Most guests never scroll past the first page of OTA search results. If your property sits on page three, it is practically invisible. The good news: OTA ranking algorithms reward things you can control. Here is how to climb the results on Booking.com, Agoda and MakeMyTrip.
How OTA ranking works (in simple terms)
Every OTA wants to show guests the properties most likely to be booked and least likely to cause problems. So rankings broadly reward conversion (views that turn into bookings), reliability (no cancellations, complaints or parity issues), quality (reviews and content), and commercial value to the OTA (availability, competitive pricing and participation in their programmes).
1. Complete your content score
Fill in every amenity, policy, room detail and description. Booking.com, Agoda and MakeMyTrip all show a content or listing score in the extranet. Aim for the maximum.
2. Lead with your best photos
Use bright, recent, high-resolution images. Put the best room shot first, then view, bathroom, common areas and facilities. Tag each photo to the correct room type.
3. Keep availability open
Properties that frequently show “sold out” or close dates rank lower. Keep at least some inventory open across dates and channels, managed through your channel manager.
4. Maintain rate parity
If your rate is cheaper elsewhere, OTAs notice and may reduce your visibility. Check parity regularly across OTAs, Google and your own website.
5. Price competitively for the date
Ranking is partly about value. Compare yourself with your competitive set for each date, especially for the next 30 days, and adjust to stay attractive.
6. Grow and reply to reviews
A higher review score and a steady flow of fresh reviews improve both ranking and conversion. Ask happy guests to leave a review, and reply professionally to every review within a day or two.
7. Use mobile and member rates
Mobile-only and member (Genius, VIP, MMT Black) discounts improve visibility to large audiences. Test them and keep the ones that bring profitable bookings.
8. Join visibility programmes selectively
Programmes such as Booking.com Preferred Partner or Agoda’s visibility boosters raise commission in exchange for better placement. They work best when your content, reviews and pricing are already strong.
9. Reduce cancellations and complaints
Accurate descriptions and clear policies reduce disappointed guests. Fewer cancellations and complaints signal reliability to the algorithm.
10. Respond fast to guest messages
Quick replies to pre-booking questions improve conversion and are tracked by several OTAs.
Track progress monthly
Note your ranking position for your main search (for example, your city and typical dates) each month, alongside views, conversion and review score. Small improvements across all ten points add up to a big jump in visibility.
